Nellcor® OxiMax® Sensors–The Digital Memory Difference
The remarkable OxiMax platform opens up a whole new world of sensor innovation that helps provide better patient care. Unlike our earlier technology, each OxiMax sensor contains a digital memory chip that stores all the calibration and operating characteristics for that type of sensor. This system gives Nellcor far greater flexibility in sensor design compared with other manufacturers.

OxiMax Sensor Choices
The OxiMax pulse oximetry system includes a sweeping array of sensor choices to meet diverse patient needs. You can choose from our full line of adhesive, reusable and specialty sensors described below. Clinicians appreciate OxiMax sensors for their quality, durability and "works-right-from-the-start" performance.

Click on the link to the right to download the Clinician's Guide to Nellcor Sensors for information that can help you select the proper type of sensor for your patients.

LoSat Expanded Accuracy Range
The OxiMax platform has enabled Nellcor to expand the accuracy specifications of certain OxiMax sensors to an industry-leading range of 60% to 100% SpO2 (versus the standard 70% to 100%). This LoSat expanded accuracy feature helps clinicians better manage patients in the challenging lower saturation ranges, such as infants with congenital heart disease.

Sensor-Monitor Communication Features
The OxiMax digital memory chip enables unique communication features that enhance patient management when the sensor is used with full-featured OxiMax pulse oximeters.

  • Sensor Messages–displays troubleshooting tips for optimal sensor placement.
  • Sensor Event Report–allows alarm event history to travel with the patient for quick assessment at various points of care.

OxiMax Specialty Sensors
Our freedom to select unique sensor calibration curves empowers Nellcor to create highly accurate sensors designed for specific patient care needs. Our ongoing OxiMax sensor innovations include the models highlighted below. Because of their unique operating characteristics and calibration curves outside those established in legacy Nellcor oximetry, these sensors operate only with monitors that contain OxiMax technology.

Max-Fast® Forehead Sensor
This unique, single-patient-use, adhesive forehead sensor often obtains SpO2 readings when digit sensors fail due to low perfusion. Plus the Max-Fast sensor responds to changes in arterial oxygen saturation typically one to two minutes faster than digit sensors for patients with weak pulses. The Max-Fast forehead sensor has our LoSat expanded accuracy range, and is more accurate than all other forehead, ear and nose sensors.

SoftCare® Nonadhesive Sensors
These sensors offer a gentle alternative for patients with fragile skin, such as geriatric and burn patients, and preterm infants. These single-patient-use sensors are made of a soft, pliable foam material that fastens with a Velcro® tab.

OxiMax Single-Patient-Use, Adhesive Sensors
This group of sensors can be used with OxiMax-compatible monitors as well as earlier-generation Nellcor pulse oximetry, making it easy to transition to OxiMax pulse oximetry. However, certain OxiMax-specific features are not accessible when the sensors are used with older, non-OxiMax monitors.

OxiMax adhesive sensors are highly accurate and feature tear-resistant bandages that provide a comfortable, secure "second-skin" fit. The bandages are also designed to prevent ambient light from interfering with SpO2 readings. OxiMax adhesive sensor models, listed below, come in the same variety of styles and sizes as our line of Oxisensor® II adhesive sensors. (See the cross-reference chart in the Ordering Information section.) Except for the MAX-R nasal sensor, all models feature our LoSat expanded accuracy range. In addition, the SpO2 accuracy specifications for neonates have been upgraded.

MAX-A (adult) and MAX-AL (adult, long)
MAX-P (pediatric)
MAX-I (infant)
MAX-N (neonate)
MAX-R (adult nasal)

OxiMax OxiCliq® Sensors
The OxiCliq® Sensor, which combines a reusable cable with a single-patient-use, adhesive bandage, is an option when patients have adequate peripheral pulses. The reusable cable contains the OxiMax digital memory chip, although the Sensor Event Report feature is not available, since the cable is used with multiple patients.

OxiMax Reusable Sensors
Nellcor's entire line of reusable sensors has the OxiMax digital memory chip. These sensors work with OxiMax monitors as well as earlier Nellcor pulse oximetry. The Sensor Event Report feature is not available in reusable sensors, since they are used with multiple patients.

Sensor Accessories
A number of sensor accessories are available, including bandage options for some of our reusable sensor models. (See Accessories for Reusable Sensors in the Ordering Information section.)
